چکیده

Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is considered one of the most promising Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET). One-hop broadcast which is time-triggered plays a leading basic role in VANET. Since the primary applications in VANET are life-safety related, there is a strong need of high reliability related to packet transmission and reception. Though IEEE 802.11p has been defined as an international standard for VANET, IEEE 802.11p has in practice some limitations in terms of reliability. Then, other MAC protocols such as MS-Aloha have been proposed to achieve higher reliability. MS-Aloha has become recommended by ETSI after evaluation, making it a promising substitute to IEEE 802.11p. However, because of inefficient use of radio channels and the problem of continuous blockings, the reliability of MS-Aloha is still not satisfying especially under very congested traffic conditions. In this thesis, a new MAC protocol named Reliable TDMA-based One-hop Broadcast (RTOB) is proposed. RTOB takes MS-Aloha as groundwork, inheriting all its advantages, which makes it advanced and easy to be applied. Compared with MS-Aloha, RTOB can achieve much higher reliability by two principles – Efficient Timeslot Usage (ETU) and Timeslot Sharing (TSS). Moreover, to evaluate the reliability from the viewpoint of life-safety applications, a novel metric named Cover Ratio (CR) which is more appropriate than the conventional Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) is proposed too. The definition and advantages of CR are given out. Besides the explanations of the main principles of RTOB, via computer simulation, this thesis quantitatively demonstrates its sufficiently high reliability under congested traffic conditions, no matter in urban, rural or highway scenarios.

A MAC Layer Protocol for Priority-based Reliable Broadcast in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

RTS-CTS handshake based protocols achieve “reliable unicast” by eliminating the hidden node problem effectively, however, these solutions are not directly or efficiently generalizable for solving the single-hop “reliable broadcast” problem, and broadcast remains as a best-effort operation in wireless ad hoc networks. Here we present a simple, light-weight, and self-stabilizing MAC protocol, nam...

Today, one of the new technologies in the modern era is Vehicular Ad-hoc Network which has takenenormous attention in the recent years. Because of rapid topology changing and frequent disconnectionmakes it difficult to design an efficient routing protocol for routing data between vehicles, called V2V orvehicle to vehicle communication and vehicle to roadside infrastructure, called V2I. Performance Analysis of a Hybrid Efficient and Reliable MAC Scheme for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks in Safety Applications

Safety applications are the highest priority services in the Vehicular Ad Hoc NETworks (VANETs). To support the highest priority service, the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is designed to provide efficient broadcast. Compared to IEEE 1609.4, a new multi-channel MAC for VANET (HER-MAC) is proposed which is more reliable in safety applications. In this paper, we propose an analytical model ...

Collision Resolution MAC Protocols for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

In wireless ad hoc networks, nodes cooperatively form a network without any infrastructure such as a BS/AP (base station or access point). The widely-used contention-based MAC protocol, IEEE 802.11b, is inefficient in multi-hop networks due to the hidden and exposed terminal problems. The most popular schedule-based MAC protocol, TDMA (time division multiple access), is difficult to implement i...

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
